Comments to Future of Domainz Taskforce online
The Future of Domainz Taskforce issued a paper last week asking for comments or feedback by October 31st. I just emailed my comments to the taskforce about 10 minutes ago and also placed them online in case anyone is interested.

IDG wakes up
IDG has another story on DomainNamesNZ. IDG is a week late reporting on the DNC warning on the mail out and had written two stories in the last week with quotes from Domainz instead of the DNC. Did IDG notice that Domainz is not the registry anymore?!?!?!

ccTLD comments on ICANN
Thomas Roessler has a blog running for the ICANN meeting in Shanghai. Two posts on it today have comments from Peter Dengate-Thrush and other ccTLD 'reps'. It has two interesting quotes:
- PDT with "ccTLDs may prefer to attend ITU meetings instead of ICANN meetings"
- .ca with "Leaving ICANN is plan B. Not complete consensus behind every point of the communiqué."
Update: Patricio Poblete of .cl has informed me that the comments during the public session of the ICANN meeting were stated as PDT's personal opinions. However, when you go to an event like this as a .nz representative it is hard for the comments not to be attributed back to the organisation and not the individual.

DomainNameNZ says they have done nothing wrong
IDG has a story DomainNamesNZ that includes quotes from DomainNamesNZ and Domainz. The curious thing is with the SRS in place Domainz has very little power. They are just a registrar in the 'new order'. The only power they have is that they do not have to provide service to anyone if they do not feel like it. The downside is of course no other organisation can become a registrar until December 7th. Of course by default Domainz has some 'influence' until registrants have a choice.
I would link to the Domainz warning that is mentioned in the story but the Domainz website has nothing on this under the regular area for these types of events'

redirect to this site in place
I have just synced the old site to this site. I also have added an automatic redirect to go from that site to this one in 10 seconds as I do not plan to update the old site again.

ccTLD's back RIR position
Another motion ccTLD motion passed unanimously at Shanghai:
"THAT the meeting congratulates the RIRs on a clear logical and inclusive response to the reform issue, in direct response to ICANN's own dilemma, a solution which we wholeheartedly support."

ccTLD's formally vote to leave DNSO
The following motion was passed unanimously at the ccTLD meeting in Shanghai today:
"THAT we announce our decision consistent with points #6 and #9 of the Stockholm Communique to withdraw from the DNSO at the end of the DNSO Names Council Meeting on Oct 29, 2002."

SOTD has major error on .nz numbers listed.
State of the Domain (SOTD) released its third Quarter 2002 report today. Now, the SOTD report is a good read but when you read it you should note that SOTD is a spin off from SnapNames, the same good people that brought us the gTLD WLS.
Now when reading this report it has new coverage on the ccTLD's. I did find curious the numbers listed for .nz. It has, based on numbers by Domains Worldwide, that .co.nz has 132,264 names as of October 16th. This is curious as the number of .co.nz names based on figures provided by the DNC is that on October 14th .co.nz had 98,992 active names (with a further 3,244 pending release). A 30% margin of error is rather large as it is not hard to come by .nz stats if you bother to look for them.
Do the rest of the figures have similar levels of errors?

DNC warning over domain name mail out
The DNC issued a warning this evening over a misleading mail out by DomainNamesNZ. Mark Harris posted on the InternetNZ members list that he received a letter. He also scanned it and placed it online. Mark also pointed out the the colour used on the letter is very similar to that of the colour Domainz uses on its letter head and website.

CIO Magazine and Domainz
Last week I saw a copy of CIO magazine and as I picked it up it fell open to a story called Domainz II — the reply which was a very interesting read. I was unable to link to it until now as the CIO website was 'under development' until yesterday. Now you can also read the story that started it all: Demented over Domainz

Total names transferred to NZRS
At 1am on Monday 116,462 active and 4,026 inactive names, for a total of 120,488, where transferred to NZRS. The inactive means that these names are pending deletion as they are at final stages of not being renewed and therefore most, if not all, names will likely be deleted in a month or so.
The active name total is nearly 4,500 names higher than used for all the budget and cost projections for the first year of the registry. InternetNZ council was aware of the higher numbers at the time of deciding on the higher of the two proposed wholesale prices.
Also of note only 349 active .maori.nz names were registered between September 5th and October 14th. This is at least half of the number of names I would have expected.

DNSO Whois interim report
The DNSO Whois Taskforce has released its Interim Report for public comment. At first glance they have recommended that gTLD and ccTLD whois should align. I wrote about this last month and I am planning to detail my opinions comparing whois with other sovereign registers.

NZ govt WIPO submission on geographic names
In March 2002 the NZ goverment made a submission on issue in geographic names and UDRP. the interesting part of the submission is "New Zealand law, custom or practice does not preclude the use of country names under any circumstances." If I owned newzealand.com I would be using this submission in my defense of WIPO D2002-0754.

SRS going live
IDG has a story about the up coming 'installation' of the SRS this weekend. This is more of a SRS Lite as no one other than Domainz is able to access it. Other registrars are unable to access until December. Lets hope that it goes OK and not a repeat of May 2000...

BNA's summary of newzealand.biz
From BNA's Internet Law News (ILN) - 10/9/02
NZ WINS TRANSFER OF NEWZEALAND.BIZ DESPITE NO TRADEMARK The Government of New Zealand has successfully obtained the transfer of the domain name newzealand.biz despite a finding that it does not hold a trademark in the name New Zealand. The panelist in the STOP decision ruled that the government's claims to collective or common law rights in the name were not supported by law. The panelist also rejected New Zealand's request that the decision not be published. Nevertheless, the panelist found that the domain was registered in bad faith and proceeded to transfer it to the NZ government.

Andy Linton appointed to ISOC .org company
Andy Linton has been appointed to the board of the new ISOC company (PIR). This is the company that will be used should ISOC win the .org bid process (which looks like a shoe in as the ICANN staff are going out of the way to promote this as the 'best' bid).

Queen gets newzealand.biz
As alerted on last month a challenge was lodged over newzealand.biz (WIPO DBIZ2002-00270). This was in fact a STOP challenge (part of the challenge process around release of names at the outset) by the New Zealand Government.
It seems the STOP was over 'New Zealand' applying for a trade mark on June 29th of last year almost exactly one year before the challenge was filed. The resulting action, transfer of the name to the challenger, looks like a typical flawed UDRP result.
Coverage on Aardvark as well as a comments on the DNSO GA list with an on going thread.
On final note I think it is very amusing that the New Zealand government is NOT eligible to have a .biz name as it requires "bona fide business or commercial use" based on the .biz FAQ.

Departing Irishmen
I saw this story on ICANNWatch and it reminded me of a certain Irishman that was involved in the .nz space a few years ago. To think one of the last legacies of this person will soon be taken out and shot... err, retired with the new SRS.

SRS implementation
Due to implementation of the SRS the ability to create or update names will not be possible on the weekend of October 12th. This has had wide release with information appearing:
It is stated that the 2 days will allow plenty of time to implement the SRS (think same thing was said over DRS as well). I hope that a fall back plan exists in case the extreme occurs and the SRS is unable to be placed in production.
