Aardvark commentary
Aardvark has a commentary today about domain registrations being done in the 'registrars' name. My thinking is this is less likely to happen now days because of checks and balances in the SRS system.

Also last week IDG had a story on the 2LD review working group that will form next month.

geek.nz nears voting
The discussion period for the geek.nz application ends soon (Feb 3rd in fact). Almost all the 'debate' occured in the first few weeks, which was to be expected. I would hope that the DNC calls an end to the discusion period and announces the straw vote as soon as possible.

New link button
I have always thought the normal blog item linked was unobvious. I am thinking of using this one instead:

DROA sends out more invoices?
My employer in today’s mail received an 'Important Notice' from Domain Registry of America regarding several gTLD names we have.

This is along the lines of the domain name slamming as it states things like 'must be renewed' and 'optional available domain names'. IT does have wording saying things like 'this is not a bill' but in the same paragraph it states 'name holders are not obligated to renew their domain name registrations with their current Registrars'.

It would appear that the only way that DROA obtained this information is from whois as it has expiry dates and accurate contact information. I will scan the invoice and place it online later today.

DNC and NZRS updates
The new areas are taking a bit longer than I expected to complete. However, unlike the this site both the NZRS and the DNC have been busy in the last few weeks. The DNC published .nz newsletter last week as well as before that updated the list of registrars. NZRS released, via the DNC, the new RIK and a warning about an outage to fix registry bugs.

further countryname.com links to newzealand.com
Another <countryname>.com issue has occurred that newzealand.com could well impact. The Jamaica Observer has a story called JTB going after jamaica.com. It seems to have many of the same aspects of the UDRP case that NZ had for newzealand.com.

New areas of the site
I am in the process of adding a .nz glossary as well as further expanding the links section (into areas such as gTLD, .nz, other ccTLD's etc). As well as this I am about to launch a major new area on the site in the up coming weeks.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions of sites please use this form to contact me.

Further commonwealth government name hijacking
In an interesting turn newzealand.com is being cited as a possible setback for the South African government to gain southafrica.com.

OfficialSpin also has two interesting stories, the first on newzealand.com and the second called HM Queen Elizabeth II as it turns out may be a nasty piece of work.

Both the southafrica.com and dvla.com stories refer to newzealand.com. Has the high point of pro trademark rulings been reached with UDRP?
