$255,000 CyberLaw proposal for InternetNZ
Does InternetNZ even bother to talk to members now days?

Earlier this week I looked at the planned council meeting agenda and saw an item called 'CyberLaw' that had no document attached to it. Today, the day of the council meeting I took another look and saw this document. If agreed InternetNZ agrees to pay $85,000 per year for three years to VUW.

One would think that before agreeing to spend $255,000 that membership would be at least consulted on this esp. as it seems numerous InternetNZ councillors people have been working on this proposal. Lets not talk about the business case and document that outlines how this fits in with InternetNZ's objectives and medium-long term plans. But hey, we about to get $2 million from Domainz sale, lets spend it before the next elections!

name squatting makes a come back?
Infotech section of Stuff has a story on a business that has 'hundreds' of domain names for sale. Such easy to recall and say names as:
  • worldtouristattractions.com
  • newzealandwineries.com
  • athenstouristattractions.com
I wonder what he will do with the squillions that people around the world will pay for these desirable names.

Some .geek.nz names already created are i.geek.nz, uber.geek.nz, iam.geek.nz, a.geek.nz and total.geek.nz. Ah, the joys of being a geek.

IDG has a story about geek.nz 'opening' at 11am today. It has some background on maori.nz which no one hopes is repeated today.

ZDnet onTPP, Domainz and silly company names
ZDnet has a story on the Australian company TPP (which stands for Two Purple Plums, I mean what is it with these goofy names in Oz?) becoming a .nz registrar. They were connected to the SRS today but approved about 3 months ago. I find it interesting they said they decided to become a .nz registrar after deciding not to buy Domainz. Guess they paid the registrar application fee on a whim then eh?

www.geek.nz and the DNC
www.geek.nz was assigned to the geek.nz applicant and it was registered last week. The amusing thing is the registrar is the DNC. Guess www.geek.nz is ' an integral part of the .nz domain name registration system'. Way to go Dean! :-)

geek.nz live tomorrow
Geek.nz is live at 11am tomorrow (August 26th). I wonder how long it will take to exceed the number of maori.nz names.

NZOC meeting and WG's
The NZOC is having a meeting on August 29th and the following are some of the major items on the agenda:
  • Process on Deauthorisation of a Registrar - draft policy for discussion
  • 2LD review - draft paper for discussion
  • Zone file transfer review - draft paper for discussion
  • Dispute Resolution - draft paper for discussion
The 2LD Review paper has yet to be even sent to the WG members and wont be discussed face to face until September. This is the issue with InternetNZ WG's. The speed, if any, of what they do is solely based on the Chair. This is why paid staff have moved to Chair WG's but it seems that this has not worked any better.

PS I don't see why a face to face NZOC meeting is required to discuss a handful of 'draft paper for discussion' items, but then again, if they don't meet they dont get meeting fees and paid travel time.

NZ Herald and general comments on registrars reaction
NZ Herald has a story with comments from New Zealand based registrars about the Domainz sale. The comments are on 'big off shore company' buying Domainz.

Domainz has gone from 100% to about 33% marketshare in 9 months. They have some of highest charges for domain names other very basic web hosting packages. InternetNZ had very favourable polices for names to be transferred from Domainz to newly authorised registrars which greatly impacted the sale price. Then they turn around and comment that they should have got the company for less than the highest bidder. Yeah right.

IDG on Domainz and MelbourneIT
IDG has a story on the Domainz sale with quotes from several people, including myself. I am quoted as a 'councillor' of InternetNZ which is not true. I have not been a councillor or officer of InternetNZ for over a year now.

The comment from the President of 'SRS cost us alot of money' is interesting as the final dividend from Domainz of $1.5 million was used to fund (capital and loan) NZRS. The $2 million is additoinal to that last dividend.

Note: The story was updated late Thursday to reflect my comments as a member of InternetNZ.

IDG on Domainz sale
IDG has a story on the Domainz sale already. I expect they will do another tomorrow with more quotes and such like. For those interested MelbourneIT has 72.5% (252,000 names) marketshare in .au, a year ago it was 83%. Including the .au names MelbourneIT is registrar for over 2 million names.

It appears that InternetNZ has completed the sale process of Domainz. Deal has closed and the new owner takes it 'as is, where is' on September 5th. No idea yet on who the buyer is.

Domain Name NZ offeres 'refunds'
NZ Herald has a story today about Domain Names NZ stating they will 'refund' anyone that is unhappy with them (but not if name has already been registered). Also they seem not to understand that they can not use whois details for marking/sales spam/scams. Several people have reported the only place details used to contact/write them were listed in their whois details.

Domainz sale in next few days?
IDG has a story on Domainz this morning. It is possible that a sale could be completed in a matter of days and a 'preferred bidder' has been selected. I find it interesting as a member of InternetNZ that the only information I get on the sale our biggest asset is from the media. Opps, sorry, I forgot that being a member of InternetNZ carries no benefits.

The interesting thing is that once sold that Domainz will have to apply for registrar status. The 'stabilising contract' will be terminated when the sale occurs.

ZDNet on Domainz sale and possible bidders
ZDnet has a detailed story on the Domainz sale and possible bidders. It lists a large number of companies and their opinions as well as comments from the InternetNZ sale advisor, Timothy Russell of Deloitte's. Must read esp. for comments like "Part of the difficulty is that we don’t see the Domainz brand as having a whole lot of value" and "It wasn't a compelling business to be honest".

Update on Domain Names NZ 'scam'
Follow up from yesterdays post about a domain name scam going on from Domain Names NZ. First of all last night the DNC issued a notice about this mailout. The website says this was posted at 11am but the email did not arrive in my mail box until after 5pm. I think the time difference is a long standing problem of the DNC office not updating the date stamp on postings when they are approved.

I also received an email from FreeParking about the 'scam' quoting from the DNC warning.

Also IDG this morning has a story on the issue.

I have a faxed copy of one of the invoices. If I have time today I will scan it, clean it up and remove private details.

Domain name scam hitting .nz?
Julie McEwan of Domain Directors has posted to the .au DNS list that it appears a domain name 'scam' mail out is occurring. It seems this is being discussed on the closed RAG list operated by the DNC. Seems it is the 'your .net.nz is available, get it now before it is to late!'.

TelstraClear approved as Registrar
TelstraClear was approved as a .nz registrar last week. It now looks like all the major Domainz resellers (formerly called .nz name providers) have become Registrars.
