InternetNZ PDT press release
InternetNZ press release on Peter Dengate-Thrush being appointed to the ICANN board. It is on Scoop but I can't see it on the InternetNZ website.

Shock Horror, Catalyst IT wins out source with NZRS
This is probable the least surprising announcement in a long time from DNC/InternetNZ/NZRS (should we refer to that as DIN from now on? :-)

New NZRS website
The NZRS website has had a major face lift. The first was was born only in a few days before NZRS took over the .nz registry. The major change in the site seems to be the registrar area which of course is private and can't be seen. The rest of it seems to be against the spirit of the entire approach that NZRS is a 'back office' role and not end user facing. Some of it seems to cross over to the DNZ area (esp the FAQ's and such like). I guess time will tell if new features are added to the site or not.

APTLD Ltd is born
APTLD Limited was 'born' on December 17th. One thing I was wondering was who the directors would be and it is the Executive Director of InternetNZ, which makes sense (other than in 6 months that will need to change). The one curious thing, but it is not material, is that the forms were submitted by The Number One I.T. Group which its only director is Peter Macaulay. I wonder what else this company does on behalf of InternetNZ?

Something for the new year
This is unrelated to domain names but I thought I would give comment on this. I am subscribed to the Borowitz Report. For anyone that follows, to any degree, American politics or events the reports are normally laugh out loud funny. Each day they are written as a news article and arrive in my mail box in time for me to read it in the morning. I must admit it is a great start to the day reading these reports.

.nz saves money!
According to DPF Peter Dengate-Thrush is about to be appointed to the ICANN board. This is great news as Peter has been trying to get on this board for at least 4 years and it means that most of his travel to these pointless meetings will now be funded by ICANN and not .nz registrants. His being a board member I would think would conflict him now on many of his other TLD lobby aspects, but then again declaring conflict is not one of his more known abilities.

Ahh, Peiter Mcaulay has updated his report. I guess he read this blog posting. To see the orginal 'free form' version I just happen to have a copy of it.

more on itunes.co.nz
This is a follow up to the short post about itunes.co.nz domain name. It is timely that about a week later the .nzDP options paper was released.

This is a classic case of an ‘international’ company (Apple) that rolled out a very popular service in the USA and then Europe, UK and Canada and now finds that the name has been taken in a local country. The interesting thing is itunes.co.nz was only registered on October 17, 2003, a long time after itunes was launched in the USA (itunes.com was first registered in 1998).

This, on the surface seems obvious that the itunes.co.nz registrant was fully aware of the relationship between the names of iPod and iTunes. The two terms do not have any relationship as far as I can tell other than Apple and their millions of dollars of marketing. Using itunes.co.nz to sell iPod related material, which is the reason stated, appears to be admitting that they wanted to use the Apple marketing effort to sell product/services.

I guess the key issue is the term itunes trade marked in New Zealand?

Based on the IPONZ website Trade Mark 647536 is for the descriptor ‘ITUNES’. It was filed in Oct 2001 and registered May 2002.

Game, Set and Match.

Media release
I guess the new InternetNZ website must be fantastic to find things. To show how good it is the Vice-President of InternetNZ has linked to a copy of an InternetNZ media release that is on this site. Oh hang on, maybe it does not prove how good the InternetNZ website is :-)

DNC issues .nz disputes process options paper
After years in the making an options paper has been released on possible .nz disputes process (.nzDP?). I was aware of the .uk DRS but always thought it was actually performed by Nominet and not just the first (free) mediation aspect. So far I have no been convinced of a need for a .nzDP but then again I dont have to live with the impact of not having one. Reading the paper I think that a WIPO run process would be worse than status quo and that Option 1 outlined has merit and should be looked at further.

I wonder who in the group does not think a process is required?

e-govt report on trust
A story on ComputerWorld raised an eyebrow with me this weekend. It is a report from the e-government unit about 'un-patched' users, ISP's and regulation. A quote from the report included by ComputerWorld is worrying:

"Government should approach InternetNZ and the two main telcos who own almost all the broadband connections"

Now InternetNZ has approx. 100 individual members and about 20 corporates. I would hardly call InternetNZ representing the Internet 'users' of NZ. In fact the membership continues to decline even with the mandate of the 'new' Executive Director was to increase membership and out reach. The local scout group or sports team has a wider representation of the community than InternetNZ ever has!

The last paragraph is a major leap away from security for users and goes on about InternetNZ governance. InternetNZ has great governance. Yeah right.

I looked at the e-government website for the report. Here are the recommendations which perhaps are not as 'bad' as the story outlines.

APTLD Ltd update
I heard that APTLD NZ Ltd had been created so I checked out the companies office wesbite. All I can find is that the name APTLD LIMITED has been reserved but no registration has been applied for (yet). Then again maybe spelling of APTLD was changed to confuse people, just like the cunning misdirection in the Executive Directors recent council report! :-)

ComputerWorld on ICANN meeting
ComputerWorld has a story about the ICANN meeting. I guess the week delay was due to the weekly cycle of the print edition.

I rock in France!
When someone looks for "big mac cost usa" on Yahoo France I come out as the fourth link (out of 496,000 results). At least I am top of something.

P.S. I should do a search on 'brickbat' soon and see how I rate... :-)

expired domain names
NBR has a good story with a very misleading title regarding expired .nz domain names and a new service from Net24.Reminds me to blog about my thoughts on expired domain name 'services' and also to update the .nz registrar price list.

Add this to your list Peter. At least I can spell ICANN and the DNC's last name.

PS The .iwi moderation changes consultation ended 2 weeks ago as well.

itunes.co.nz
Quick post (I plan to write more on this later) about itunes.co.nz being held by someone that only registered the name in October. Stuff has the story on it and itunes.com.au

German ruling on generic domain name registration
TheRegister has an article on a German court ruling about 'first come, first served' and that by registering a generic name does not imply an intent to cause damage.

Typical InternetNZ
More things change the more the remain the same. Seems that InternetNZ has a press release out today (Sunday) regarding the ICANN meeting but are too lazy to bother to put it online. If you are gonna bother to do a press release you might as will spend the extra 60 seconds to place it on your website! Seems DPF has a copy on his blog.

When ICANN comes to town
Looks like InternetNZ will be hosting the March 2006 ICANN in Wellington (assuming ICANN and/or InternetNZ still exist that far in the future :-)

Warm welcome Mr APTLD
It has just been announced that Jordan Carter is 'moving' from the Office of the DNC to the 'secretariat' side of InternetNZ. Jordan should bring some good skills, process, and proactive approach to InternetNZ which has been sadly lacking for about... hmmm, forever. I assume he becomes Mr APTLD now as well.

Frank March, international man of mystery
Word has trickled out this week that Frank March has accepted a 6 month role with WGIG (Women for Greater Internet Good Working Group on Internet Governance).  This is Geneva based role and by sounds of it could be very interesting in a UN/ITU/GAC type of way. I hope he follows Mike Moore’s lead and washes his socks in the hotel room to save money for us tax payers :-)

APTLD NZ LTD?
A recent InternetNZ Exec Committee meeting has comments about a APTLD NZ Limited company. I wonder where this is incorporated as it is not in NZ (at the moment anyway). I would be interested to also see the listed directors and such like.

.iwi 2LD submissions
Some interesting submissions on the proposed .iwi 2LD moderation changes. I wonder what NZOC will do as I cant see any huge 'ground support' for the change and several submissions (including my own) have questioned the extended usage or have stated more consultation is required.
