Conflict makes the heart grow fonder?
NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration) has announced that it plans to keep ICANN in its ‘technical manager’ of the DNS role. Other than one could comment that ICANN has been everything but the ‘technical manager’ of the DNS it does place the entire role of ICANN and the ccTLD ‘movement’ in an interesting position.

One of the people that spans both camps is Peter Dengate-Thrush. Peter is in an interesting position as he is: The two of the roles are complementary (APTLD and InternetNZ) however the first has major tension with the later two roles.

I am not sure how one can balance the legal role as a Director of ICANN with that the other roles. ICANN is incorporated in California, APLTD in Malaysia and InternetNZ in New Zealand. Each role should represent the respective corporations best interests. The outstanding issues between ICANN and the global ccTLD’s are significant (the exact degree depends on your views but I think everyone will agree they are not minor nor will be solved in the very near future).

I wonder how InternetNZ handles this conflict of interest on a daily basis? If Peter had to excuse himself on any conflicted issue then very little would be left for him to work on.
